(Los Angeles, CA) — The University of Southern California’s school of social work is removing the word “field” from its curriculum. USC cites the word’s roots in slavery. In a letter posted to Twitter, the school wrote, “Language can be powerful, and phrases such as ‘going into the field’ or ‘field work’ maybe have connotations for descendants of slavery and immigrant workers that are not benign.” The school says making this change supports its anti-racist social work and inclusivity. From now on, instead of “field” the school will use “practicum.”
