(Los Angeles, CA) — A coalition of community and student activist is once again calling for the end of the Los Angeles School Police Department. The group instead wants services such as mental health and academic programs to be expanded with a focus on Black students’ needs. Amir Whitaker with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California spoke to protesters gather at the Mann UCLA Community School yesterday. He said school police contribute to trauma experienced by students including incidents of being “arrested for food fights or just other minor things.” In 2020, school police funding was cut by 35-percent by the Los Angeles Board of Education.
