A Fourth Year Of High School Math And College Access

(Los Angeles, CA) — Learning math is good, and more math is even better. That’s according to a study by UCLA’s Los Angeles Education Research Institute. It confirms the benefits of a fourth year of math in high school. The study that tracked seniors in Los Angeles Unified found students who took math as seniors were more likely in a better position to enroll in a four-year college and stay in college for a second year. California high school students are required to take two years of math but most typically take three as some districts require it or encourage it. Those being Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. A fourth senior year of math is optional. The LAUSD has a long way to go. According to niche.com 44% of students are proficient in reading and only 33% are proficient in math. And according to publicshcoolreview: “Los Angeles Unified School District, is ranked #1055 of all 1,873 school districts in California (based off of combined math and reading proficiency testing data) for the 2020-2021 school year”.
