White House, McCarthy Continue Back-and-Forth Over Debt Ceiling

(Washington, DC) — The White House and Speaker Kevin McCarthy continue to spar over the debt ceiling. McCarthy on Thursday reiterated his demand that President Biden meet with him to discuss a potential deal to raise the debt limit and avoid a potential default later this year. McCarthy took a jab at the President’s age, saying he would bring lunch to the White House and “make it soft food.” Biden, however, has refused to sit down with McCarthy until the Speaker puts forward a comprehensive budget proposal. The White House released Biden’s budget earlier this month which included tax increases on the wealthiest Americans. While Republicans are pushing Biden and Democrats to agree to spending cuts as a condition for raising the debt limit, the President has called on the GOP to raise the borrowing limit without conditions.
