GOP Defends Trump Following Indictment

(Washington, DC) — Republicans are rallying around former President Trump following the news of his indictment Thursday. Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury investigating payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. Speaker Kevin McCarthy accused Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg of “weaponizing” the justice system against Trump. He said the House will hold Bragg accountable. Former Vice President Mike Pence called the indictment an outrage, while Republican Senator Lindsey Graham went on Fox News and urged viewers to donate to Trump, arguing the indictment is “going to destroy America.”

Meanwhile, Democrats — who have spent nearly 6 years trying to find a crime to indict Trump, like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi stressed “no one is above the law.” President Biden declined to comment.

DeSantis: Trump Indictment ‘A Weaponization Of Legal System’

(Tallahassee, FL) — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is slamming a New York grand jury’s vote to indict former President Trump. In a tweet Thursday, DeSantis said the “weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head.” He noted it’s “un-American.” DeSantis added that his state won’t assist in an extradition request if one is made for Trump. The Florida governor is expected to be an opponent of Trump’s for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Speaker McCarthy Slams Indictment

(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says the country is “irreparably damaged” by the indictment of former President Trump. McCarthy accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of “weaponizing” the country’s “sacred system of justice” against Trump. McCarthy also tweeted “The American people will not tolerate this injustice.” He did not comment about any specific action Congress might take, but did add “the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.
