(Washington, DC) — Only a quarter of sunscreens do their job without containing ingredients that could be “troublesome.” So said a program manager for the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit group that has investigated sunscreens for nearly two decades. The rest contain at least one of a dozen chemicals the FDA says manufacturers should research before it recommends them as safe and effective. A new report from the EWG shows sunscreens from the brands ATTITUDE, Babo Botanicals, and Beautycounter passed their testing. A senior scientist said manufacturers are moving away from oxybenzone, but a “significant portion” of sunscreens are still made up of those 12 chemicals.
