La Jolla Campaigning To Flee San Diego.

(San Diego, CA) — La Jolla is again looking to break away from San Diego and become it’s own city. The idea of La Jolla seceding from the city of San Diego has been debated for 80 years, and now new efforts are underway to create the 19th city in San Diego County. The Union Tribune says supporters are frustrated by a lack of upkeep for roads and parks from the city, and new zoning rules that allow for more housing units on single piece of property. They say San Diego residents wouldn’t have to pay for infrastructure and maintenance in an older neighborhood, and those living in La Jolla could pass their own tax and bond measures. Those opposed say the money generated by La Jolla should go toward helping other parts of the city. In order to form a new city, the effort must appeal to LAFCO, the Local Agency Formation Commission, and be approved by a majority of voters in both La Jolla and the rest of the city of San Diego, likely with an exit fee of millions of dollars per year.
