Appeal Possible After Van Houten Gets Parole

(Los Angeles, CA) – A convicted killer and former follower of Charles Manson is getting approved for parole, but she’s not being released today. Governor Gavin Newsom previously prevented Leslie Van Houten from being paroled. On Tuesday, a California state appeals court overturned Newsom’s decision. By a vote of two to one, the court is reinstating the parole previously issued by a parole board.

Van Houten was 19 when she helped murder a Los Angeles couple. Leno and Rosemary LaBiance were brutally killed in their home over half a century ago. The new court ruling does not automatically mean Van Houten will get out. The state could appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office have commented as of Tuesday afternoon.
