A historic hotel that played host to Hollywood movie stars in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s is now facing a wrecking ball. The Sportsmen’s Lodge was built in the 1880s predating the rise of Hollywood and even before Studio City, where the hotel stands, got its name.
Guests like Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, and John Wayne used to spend time at the lodge. While they sipped Martinis guests were given fishing rods in order to catch the fish they would eat for dinner in the white tablecloth dining room.
The Los Angeles Planning Commission approved a mixed-use project to be built in the Lodge’s place. It will feature commercial space and 580 apartment units with 78 of those slated for low-income residents.
