10 Freeway Underpass That Caught Fire Failed Inspection Months Earlier

The 10 freeway underpass near Downtown Los Angeles where a massive fire broke over a week ago, failed an inspection months earlier. Combustible liquids and piles of pallets were stored under the freeway in an area leased out by CalTrans.

The fire is being investigated as an arson. The CalTrans program leases more than 600 spaces under freeway bridges with restrictions on what can be stored.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has ordered an assessment of the enforcement of those restrictions and the lease program itself. Preliminary results are expected on Wednesday.
