The Los Angeles Times is announcing mass layoffs, as it cuts about a quarter of its staff.

California’s largest daily paper is laying off 115 people from its newsroom. Unionized journalists staged a one-day work stoppage last week to protest the layoffs.

The L.A. Times is owned by Doctor Patrick Soon-Shiong.  He says the paper is losing between 30 and 40 million dollars each year.

“Today’s decision is painful for all, but it is imperative that we act urgently and take steps to build a sustainable and thriving paper for the next generation,” said Soon-Shiong. “We are committed to doing so. I’m disappointed with the employee’s union. The one-day walkout it staged last week did not help the situation.

The employment firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas estimates that more than 26-hundred news jobs were lost in recent months.
