More Bay Area Safeway stores are removing self-checkout kiosks due to problems with theft.  Certain Safeway stores in San Francisco, Emeryville, and Oakland have already removed the machines.

Meanwhile, a California legislator wants to tighten regulations on self-checkout kiosks, saying they make it easier for people to steal.  Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas says the kiosks cause approximately 16 times more loss than cashier checkout stands, resulting in a ten-billion-dollar annual loss.

She introduced legislation to require one worker for every two self-checkout machines to reduce theft and save jobs.
