California lawmakers are advancing a bill to regulate self-checkout lanes in grocery stores. The bill would mandate at least one staffed lane, limit the items customers can scan themselves, and require a worker to oversee self-checkout stations. While alcohol purchases are already prohibited at self checkout, the bill proposes banning the sale of tobacco, and other age-restricted products.
Grocery store representatives warn the stricter regulations could increase prices for shoppers due to higher staffing costs. A key vote on the bill is expected later this month.
