The Justice Department files a lawsuit to block California’s new congressional map, known as Proposition 50. The lawsuit alleges the map uses race to favor Hispanic voters. Bill Essayli, the Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California says this is a clear violation of federal law.
The measure was pushed heavily by Governor Gavin Newsom. The DOJ wants a federal judge to prevent California from using the map in any future elections. Democrats need only a few seats to take control of the House. The case could influence which party controls Congress in 2026.
