The FBI has notified some current and former members of Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration that their calls or electronic messages were monitored in an investigation of his former chief of staff. This follows the arrest of Dana Williamson, Newsom’s lead aide from 2023 to 2024. Williamson is charged with stealing about 225 thousand dollars from a campaign fund linked to former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. She allegedly conspired with Becerra’s chief of staff, his wife, and two lobbyists. Williamson also faces charges for misreporting some purchases as business expenses for her taxes. She’s also charged with lying to federal investigators. The Sacramento Bee was the first to report that some officials in California and Washington D.C had gotten notice their communications had been intercepted.
