About 325-thousand people in California need new REAL IDs. A DMV computer error from 2006 affected expiration dates. The error was just recently found in a review of the department’s technology system. It mostly affects immigrants with legal status, like green card and visa holders. Their REAL IDs got the wrong expiration dates, ones not associated with the ID holders’ authorized stay. The DMV claims no REAL IDs were given to undocumented people. The DMV also says it has fixed the problem and officials are contacting those who need new REAL IDS.
