The California man accused of sending a fake ransom demand to the family of the missing mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie is appearing in court this afternoon. Police are still searching for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, six days after she vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home in an apparent kidnapping. Prosecutors allege Los Angeles County resident Derrick Callella sent text messages this week to Guthrie’s daughter and son-in-law demanding payment in bitcoin. Investigators say the messages were traced to Callella’s home, and he admitted to sending the texts. Callella is facing federal charges of transmitting a ransom demand and using a telecommunications device to threaten or harass.
