For now, over 20,000 migrant truck drivers in California can keep their licenses after a court ruling. The federal government pushed California to revoke the licenses due to paperwork issues. The DMV began, but advocacy groups sued, so the state paused the process.
The federal government has threatened to cut $160 million in highway funds and block the state from issuing commercial licenses altogether if it doesn’t comply. California has about 700,000 commercial drivers. As Cal Matters reports, a final decision is expected soon as well as a plan to help the drivers whose licenses were revoked while still meeting federal demands.
The Trump administration launched a crackdown on the CDL issuing process as part of its efforts to tackle illegal immigration. The move came after a series of fatal crashes involving non-domiciled CDL holders, including the most recent one last week.
