As gas prices rise in California, Republican Senator Tony Strickland is proposing Senate Bill 1035, legislation to suspend the state’s gas tax and fuel regulations for a year to provide financial relief. “Californians are being crushed by high gas prices,” Strickland said in a statement. “My measure pumps the brakes on high gas prices and puts money back where it belongs — in the pockets of hardworking Californians.”
California drivers could save about one dollar per gallon at the pump. Under the legislation, gas receipts will show how much tax would have been charged before the pause for full transparency.
A separate bill, Assembly Bill 1745 by Republican Assemblymember Jeff Gonzalez, says his bill prioritizes relief instead of pursing new mileage-based driving taxes proposed by Democrats.
Democrats quickly pushed back, warning that suspending the tax could jeopardize funding for transportation infrastructure. California has the highest gas tax in the country at 61 cents per gallon.
