The average gas price in California is quickly approaching six dollars per gallon. Today, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas is five dollars, 79 cents, after a three-cent overnight increase. The average is up 26 cents in the past week and a dollar and 16 cents in the past month. Some counties have already eclipsed the six-dollar mark, including Marin and Humboldt. San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Sonoma and Napa counties are on the verge of doing the same. The national average is $3.96 per gallon.
