Congressman Eric Swalwell is facing pressure from fellow Democrats to resign from the House over sexual assault allegations. Swalwell suspended his campaign for California’s governor race on Sunday over the allegations, which he has denied. Democrat lawmakers including Congressman Jared Huffman as well as Congresswomen Teresa Leger Fernandez, Nydia Velázquez and Pramila Jayapal have voiced their calls for Swalwell’s resignation on social media. Fernandez also indicated her plans to support a resolution to expel Swalwell from Congress.
Also, a letter released Sunday and signed by more than 50 former Swalwell staffers described recent allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against him as “serious” and “credible,” while demanding he resign from Congress and drop his bid for California governor.
The U.S. House Ethics Committee is launching an investigation into California Congressman Eric Swalwell. It centers on a series of sexual misconduct allegations made against the Bay Area Democrat. The bipartisan committee says it’s looking into whether Swalwell “violated the Code of Official Conduct.” The committee made specific mention of allegations of Swalwell sexually assaulting an employee working under his supervision. The results of the investigation could lead to his expulsion from the House.
