The U.S. Department of Education has launched a civil rights investigation into the Los Angeles Unified School District, focusing on how it handles allegations of sexual misconduct involving teachers. The inquiry centers on a district policy that allows educators accused of inappropriate relationships with students to be reassigned rather than dismissed. In many cases, reassignment results in teachers being transferred to another school site while investigations or disciplinary processes continue. Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey criticized the approach, stating that the district appears to prioritize continued employment over student safety. The statement has intensified scrutiny of LAUSD’s procedures and accountability measures. In response, the district strongly denied the allegation, emphasizing that it treats all claims of sexual misconduct and harassment with the utmost seriousness. A district spokesperson also said there is confusion about how reassignment policies are applied, suggesting the process may be misunderstood or inconsistently interpreted across cases.
