Seven candidates hoping to become California’s next governor faced off during a heated debate Wednesday night, sparring over issues ranging from crime and homelessness to the economy and immigration. Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco shared the stage with Democrats Xavier Becerra, Matt Mahan, Tom Steyer, Katie Porter, and Antonio Villaraigosa. The candidates frequently interrupted one another while defending their records and criticizing opponents during the wide-ranging event. The debate comes as the campaign enters its final stretch, with less than a month remaining before the June 2 primary election. Mail-in ballots have already been sent to voters across the state, meaning many Californians are beginning to make their decisions now. A recent statewide poll shows Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra leading the crowded field heading into the final weeks of campaigning. Under California’s election system, the two candidates receiving the most votes in the primary will move on to face each other in the general election this November statewide.
