Memorial Day travel is expected to reach historic levels this year, with AAA forecasting a record number of Americans taking trips for the holiday weekend. Officials estimate that about 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and May 25. The vast majority of travelers, roughly 39.1 million, are projected to drive to their destinations, while another 3.66 million are expected to fly. Travel by trains, buses, and cruises is also anticipated to rise compared with previous years. AAA says popular domestic destinations for the holiday include Seattle, New York City, and Orlando, Florida, as millions look to begin the summer season with vacations and family gatherings. Internationally, travelers are showing strong interest in cities such as Rome, Paris, and Vancouver, Canada. The travel organization says the increase reflects continued demand for leisure trips despite higher costs and crowded airports and highways across America.
