Xavier Becerra is leading a new poll in California’s race for governor. A survey released by Emerson College Polling shows the Democrat has moved ahead of Republican Steve Hilton in the crowded field ahead of the June 2 primary. The poll found 19 percent of likely voters support Becerra while Hilton trails closely behind with just over 17 percent backing. Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer ranks third, drawing about 16-and-a-half percent support from likely voters. Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco places fourth, earning more than ten-and-a-half percent support. Democrats Katie Porter, Matt Mahan, Antonio Villaraigosa and Tony Thurmond follow behind in that order. Under California’s election system, the top two finishers in the June 2 primary, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to compete in the November general election runoff for governor. The latest survey highlights a competitive race as candidates campaign heavily across the state before voters cast ballots.
