Authorities in Northern California are warning residents after a dangerous invasive insect was discovered on plants sold at Costco stores. Agriculture officials in multiple counties say glassy-winged sharpshooters were found on grapevines and citrus plants purchased from the retailer. The insect poses a serious threat to California agriculture because it spreads diseases that can destroy grapevines and damage crops. Officials traced the insects to grapevines shipped from Burchell Nursery in Fresno County. According to authorities, the nursery failed to notify agriculture officials before sending out the plants, which is required under state regulations. Residents who recently bought grapevines or citrus plants from Costco on or after April 21 are urged not to plant, transport, or dispose of them until they contact their local county agriculture department for guidance and inspection.
