California has officially designated May 17 as Bruce Lee Day following the signing of new legislation by Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday. The bill, introduced by San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney, honors the martial arts legend’s lasting influence on film, popular culture, and Chinese American history. Lee was born in San Francisco before spending much of his childhood in Hong Kong. The State Senate unanimously approved the measure in a 38-0 vote before it reached the governor’s desk. Lawmakers selected May 17 because it marks the day Lee returned to San Francisco at age 18, a pivotal moment that eventually led to his groundbreaking career in martial arts and Hollywood. With the new law, Bruce Lee becomes the first Chinese American to be honored with an official commemorative day in California. Supporters say the designation recognizes his enduring legacy and his impact on generations of artists, athletes, and fans across the world.
