San Francisco’s Fourth of July celebration along the waterfront brought massive crowds, fireworks and long delays—but the night also led to dangerous conditions across the city.
As people packed areas near the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf to watch the annual fireworks display, traffic quickly backed up for hours. Streets around the waterfront became congested as drivers struggled to leave after the show, while public transportation and rideshare services faced heavy demand.
Emergency crews also responded to multiple fireworks-related incidents throughout the night. Illegal fireworks were reported in several neighborhoods, creating safety concerns for residents, pets and first responders. The San Francisco Fire Department saw a surge in calls as crews worked to handle reports of fires, medical emergencies and other holiday-related incidents.
City officials continue to urge residents to leave fireworks to professionals and plan ahead when attending large public events. While the waterfront show remains a popular Bay Area tradition, the holiday’s aftermath served as a reminder of the challenges that come with celebrating in one of the region’s busiest cities.
