The FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating after a drone collided with a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter in Tarzana. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon near Reseda Boulevard and the 101 Freeway while the aircraft was operating in the area. Following the collision, the helicopter’s pilot made a precautionary landing at Van Nuys Airport so crews could inspect the aircraft for damage. According to a preliminary FAA report, the helicopter sustained damage to its windshield, but no injuries were reported among those on board. Authorities say the drone involved was relatively large, measuring approximately three feet by three feet. An LAPD official believes the drone operator may have been attempting to capture aerial video of a nearby brush fire burning near the Encino Reservoir when the collision occurred. Federal investigators are now working to identify the drone pilot and determine whether any federal aviation laws or regulations were violated during the incident.
