California lawmakers are expected to approve legislation that would effectively ban child marriage across the state. The bill moving through the Legislature would prohibit anyone under 18 from marrying, with no exceptions. California is currently one of only three states that allow minors of any age to marry with the consent and signature of a parent or guardian. Supporters of the proposed ban say the law is needed to protect children from forced marriages, exploitation, and potential abuse. Advocates say California recorded approximately 35,000 marriages involving minors between 2000 and 2021, with girls making up the majority of those married. Supporters argue that minors may not have the ability or resources to fully understand the legal and personal consequences of marriage. The legislation is expected to receive final approval from lawmakers, and Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the bill into law, ending California’s longstanding exception allowing children to marry with parental consent.
