Bay Area and state public health officials are warning Amtrak passengers about a possible measles exposure after a passenger later hospitalized with the disease traveled through six California counties earlier this month. UCSF infectious disease specialist Dr. Monica Gandhi says even vaccinated people who were exposed could potentially pick up and spread the virus to people who are not immune. The possible exposure occurred in Alameda, Butte, Kern, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Joaquin counties. The California Department of Public Health says the unvaccinated passenger arrived in Los Angeles on September 10th, then traveled on Amtrak trains and Thruway buses through Bakersfield, Stockton, Oroville, Sacramento and Emeryville. The passenger left California on September 14th. Health officials are urging anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms and check their vaccination status. Measles is highly contagious, especially among people who are unvaccinated or otherwise lack immunity to the virus.
