Proponents of an initiative that aim to repeal Governor Brown’s gas tax hike are suing over the state-drafted title and summary for the ballot measure, which they say is negative and misleading.
“They don’t even mention the word tax. It has no relation to what the measure actually does. Even scholars have a problem understanding with what the summary says. I’m taking them to court. And, I’m telling them to put it in plain English so the voters know what it says and can understand it.
That’s Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen of Huntington Beach. He’s leading the repeal effort. And, he says almost everything in the short summary would mislead the voters, which is classic Brown.
“Look, this is not the first time for Jerry Brown. Back in 2010, when he was attorney general, a judge forced him twice to go back and change the language that they were trying to put in Prop. 25 which was the majority vote budget. Or you can look to Prop 30, in 2012, which was the temporary tax to fund education. Well, that tax is not temporary and only about half the money went to fund education. So Brown has a pattern of deception when it comes to ballot initiatives.”
Assemblyman Allen needs to collect 365,000 signatures in 150 days to qualify a measure for the ballot that would repeal the governor’s gas tax.
