The Los Angeles City Council’s ban on allowing people deemed too disruptive to comment at its open mic sessions has prompted concern by free speech advocates.
Civil rights attorney Carol Sobel says the L.A. City Council is overreacting.
“It’s not that you can’t have rules at a city council meeting, but how do you apply those rules? I don’t think the city council is equipped to do that because they operate off their injured feelings about some of this and that’s not a good way if you’re a public official. So somebody insults you, big deal, you don’t like it? Get another job.”
The ACLU of Southern California says disruptive conduct should be handled as it happens, not by banning individuals from future meetings.
