California, the country’s most populous state and the first to implement a state-wide lockdown to combat the coronavirus outbreak, is setting daily records for new cases this week. The state reported Wednesday it broke a record Tuesday with an increase of more than 7,000 cases in a day, obliterating a record hit the day before when more than 5,000 new cases were recorded. The state’s positivity rate — how many people test positive compared with how many in total are being tested — has also been on the rise in the past days, as have hospitalization numbers, the governor said. The increase in positivity rate the Governor cited is from 4.6% to 5.1%- slightly below the US average. Newsom also said the state has been preparing for an increase in cases-specifically increased hospitalizations The Governor said that California hospitals are at 8% capacity: 4095 of the 52,745 beds are in use. Gov. Gavin Newsom said. Officials are urging residents to wear face coverings and keep their distance from one another. On Wednesday, the governor threatened to withhold funding from counties that don’t enforce health orders put in place to curb the spread of the virus.
