(Los Angeles, CA) — Los Angeles health officials are warning hospitals they could run out of patient beds in the next few weeks. The county health director Barbara Ferrer, who is not a medical doctor, is telling hospitals to start putting in place their plans to deal with a surge in cases. Ferrer says if the current trajectory of cases continues to rise, the amount of hospital and ICU beds will be insufficient to meet patient needs. Preparing for a surge in cases also includes putting elective surgeries on hold to make extra space for patient beds.
