(Washington, D.C.) — New jobless claims dropped slightly among Americans to just over one million in the last week, but the total remains historically high. Senior Economic Analyst Mark Hamrick with Bankrate.com says California had the highest increase in unemployment claims of any state.
More than 27 million claims were made nationwide as of the first week of August. The upward trend of new claims being filed every week has continued for 23 consecutive weeks, according to Hamrick. Hamrick says the federal government failing to come to an agreement on a new round of relief aid legislation has contributed to the higher number of claims.
