Judge Rules Taylor Swift’s Copyright Lawsuit Can Proceed

(Los Angeles, CA) — The two songwriters who claim their lyrics were stolen by Taylor Swift for her hit single “Shake It Off” might have a case. A Los Angeles federal court judge says songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler have provided sufficient evidence to show that the “arrangement or a sequence of creative expression” that Swift used was similar enough. Hall and Butler filed suit in 2017, saying the 2001 3LW recording Playas Gon’ Play, was the source of the singer’s lyrics on “Shake It Off.” Swift’s representatives have disputed the songwriters’ claims calling it a “money grab.”
