Demonstrations have been growing since lockdown rules were blamed for the recent deaths of nearly a dozen people in a fire in a remote northwest city. Thousands have taken to the streets openly calling for Xi’s resignation in a rare display of disobedience in a country where criticism of the government can result in severe penalties.
