Congress Investigating Unemployment Fraud In California During Pandemic

(San Diego, CA) — Congress is now investigating unemployment fraud from the pandemic that resulted in billions of dollars in losses for the state of California. The Oversight and Accountability Committee in the new Republican House has asked California’s Employment and Development Department for a review of the pandemic fraud that included people using the names of prison inmates to receive unemployment money. The Sacramento Bee says the panel is also looking at pandemic unemployment issues in Pennsylvania and New York during hearings this week. More than 17-hundred investigations have been opened in California over the last three years, with state officials estimating at least 20 billion dollars –and maybe four times that–worth of improper payments.
