A social observer says Mattel’s recent introduction of a new line of Barbie dolls that reflect more realistic body types may score political correctness points but is ultimately a waste of time. Advice Goddess Amy Alkon says the preferences for the pretty dolls is rooted in evolutionary science.
They find that chimps play with sticks like dolls and so that’s an evolutionary thing and so what we prefer is beautiful women; we evolve to prefer that because men prefer that and women co-evolve with men, so they’re looking for those dolls that are the pretty dolls and not the short fat dolls.
Alkon says the attributes we ascribe to female beauty are actually based on natural selection because the “prettier” women are more likely to be fertile. Alkon is the author of “Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes say the F Word.” She was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning with Doug McIntyre and Terrie Rae Elmer.
