Republican candidate Donald Trump has gotten too way too much coverage from the news media. CNN, FOX, major broadcast networks, talk radio and internet news sites are going too far in their reporting on and analysis of the Donald’s latest pronouncements. That’s what 75 percent of American voters say, according to a new Pew Research Center poll. Even people who want Trump to be president say it’s overkill.
“Fully a third of Trump’s supporters themselves say that Trump gets too much media coverage,” says Pew Research’s Politic’s Team Director Jocelyn Kiley. “(Among) no other candidate’s supporters are there more than 12 percent (who say) that their candidate gets too much media coverage.”
Kiley says there’s a lot of nuance in how the public views the way the candidates are being covered by the media. For instance, she says fully 42 percent of Trump supporters and 54 percent of Senator Ted Cruz supporters feel that Ohio Governor John Kasich does not get enough coverage in the media. No surprise then that 82 percent of Kasich supporters say their candidate is getting too little coverage.
Perhaps it’s because the news coverage focuses too much on trivial, personality-focused issues that drive up the ratings
“One of our earlier polls this year … one of the questions asked was if the campaign was focused on important issues and that was a critique that the public had against the campaign in general. It wasn’t specific to any candidate. The public as a whole said no the campaign was not focused on important issues.”
Kiley was a guest on 790 KABC’s McIntyre in the Morning with Doug McIntyre and Terri-Rae Elmer.
