Hopes for achieving a supermajority in the California State Senate are hanging on one too-close-to-call race in the 29th state Senate District. The district spans 15 cities in Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, but nearly 3 in 4 of its registered voters live in Orange County. It’s importance was highlighted when President Obama endorsed Democratic contender Josh Newman against Republican Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang in the weeks before the election. Democrats already have a supermajority in the Assembly. A supermajority allows the Democrats to pass taxes, move constitutional amendments to the ballot and amend political spending laws without Republican support. Right now, Chang has a two-point lead over Newman.
