A new study says when it comes to longer life, get out of the gym and step into a bar.
Not exactly, but when it comes to making it into your nineties, booze really does beat exercise.
Reporter Jim Roope says University of California neurologist Claudia Kawas tracked 1,700 nonagenarians beginning in 2003, in a retirement community in Orange County, to explore the impacts of daily habits on longevity.
“Dr. Kawas looked at people who drank two glasses of beer or wine a day and found they were 18 percent less likely to experience a premature death verses participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day and ate a healthier diet, but abstained from alcohol. Those folks cut the same risk by only 11 percent.”
Jim goes on to report that everything should be done in moderation and it’s actually healthier to be slightly overweight and not thinner in your later years. Also, the study didn’t take in account genetic components nor did it say the people living longer were healthier or happier or even had a better quality of life.
Cheers!
