The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a cake to celebrate the marriage of a same sex couple, because of a religious objection. But is this really a huge setback for gay rights?
KABC legal analyst Royal Oakes says the court’s ruling was narrowly focused on the specific case of the baker and will not diminish gay rights in the broader sense.
”Probably those who look at this decision and say it’s kind of narrow are right. So, I don’t know that it’s going to mean that much for the society. We recognize that religion is important and in this instance it can trump someone complaining about bias against someone based on sexual orientation. But we recognize it has limits … The bottom line is this does not get rid of anti-discrimination laws and, in fact, the opinion emphasized that states are still free to pass anti-discrimination laws that are based on the LGBTQ community’s rights.”
