Some statistics show crime is going down in California, but many in law enforcement say not true and in fact, a lot of crimes are going unreported.
Ron Hernandez is the president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs.
“It gets to a point, where law enforcement and even the community feels if nothing is going to happen to the person who that’s being accused, then why should they waste their time either reporting it and that keeps us from taking them to jail. So, it’s kind of interesting how this whole thing is playing out and how they’re using the statistics, but the fact of the matter is crime has gone up.”
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, only 42% of all violent crimes and 36% of property crimes were reported to police.
He goes on to say its a word of game of sorts and thanks to Props 47 and 57, and AB 109, they’re able to get away with it, since violent crime has been reclassified.
“I know this is extreme, but that would be like saying somebody’s decided that the word murder is just too, we don’t like to use that word. So, although murder is still murder, let’s call it something else. Then, next year they do a study and say hey look, the murder rate is down. Well, that’s because they’re not calling it murder anymore, that’s why.”
