Much of California is now dealing with a rare, powerful atmospheric river. The storm has flooded roads and homes in Redding, where a driver died this week after getting trapped in a truck. Shasta County is now under a state of emergency. Northern California saw three to six inches of rain in a period of 24 hours with more rain being expected throughout the week.
In Southern California, heavy rain started Tuesday night and is expected to continue through Saturday. Evacuation warnings are in place with a risk of flooding, mud and debris flows in the recent burn scars. The Southern California valleys and coast could see three to six inches of rain. The foothills and mountains could see eight to 12 inches of rain, with rainfall rates potentially surpassing an inch per hour at times.
Officials have urged holiday travelers to avoid the roads and reconsider holiday travel as a series of powerful winter storms continue to bring heavy rains, winds and flooding
