A federal court is upholding California’s new congressional map, saying it was drawn for political, not racial, reasons. The court ruled two-to-one that the map was not racially discriminatory. Republicans say they’ll appeal the case to the U-S Supreme Court. Unless the high court strikes down yesterday’s ruling, the new map will be used for November’s congressional elections.
Proposition 50 temporarily lets lawmakers redraw congressional lines so Democrats will likely gain five seats. House maps are typically redrawn every 10 years after the census. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority with 218 seats to Democrats’ 213.
