At least 50 California legislative Democrats are urging their congressional colleagues to shut down the federal government and block further funding to immigration enforcement agencies.

Lawmakers have until Friday to pass the one point three trillion-dollar spending bill. But Democrats want an overhaul of policies for ICE and border patrol before they vote yes. California lawmakers want to set state policy without breaking federal law.
Two proposed bills would stop federal agents from using state property as staging areas and require independent investigations of shootings by federal immigration agents. Another would let some court appearances stay remote through 2029.
