President Trump says he’s considering ways to cap California’s gas tax. In an exclusive interview with The California Post, the president says his plan could see drivers paying 40 percent less at the pump. California currently has the highest combined state and federal gas tax in the nation, at about 71 cents per gallon. The president accuses Governor Newsom and state lawmakers of offsetting falling fuel prices with higher taxes. Any move to limit California’s gas tax would require congressional action or an indirect approach, such as tying federal highway funding to tax levels. Experts say that strategy would almost certainly face legal challenges.
