A wave of teacher strikes across California is no coincidence. It is a result of a coordinated effort by the statewide teachers’ union to launch a multiple-district push for higher pay and better benefits. San Francisco teachers went on strike for four days this month. West Contra Costa teachers walked in December. Districts including Los Angeles, Oakland, Twin Rivers and Natomas have voted overwhelmingly to authorize strikes. California Teachers Association President David Goldberg told Cal Matters that the strategy is deliberate to increase pressure statewide, with contracts in multiple districts set to expire at the same time. Some experts warn that if districts agree to large raises, cuts could hit programs, staff and ultimately students.
